Regions compared: how cutoffs differ from Europe to Oceania
Epic runs most cups in seven regions, with the same rules and the same scoring table in each. The points it takes to reach a given rank are not the same, though, and the gap is not where most players expect it: it is small at the top of the board and large further down.
How many teams play
The first difference is the size of the field. Europe fields the most teams in almost every format, NA-East follows, and the other five regions are a half to a quarter of Europe's size in the standard formats. The table gives the typical field of a cup in each region and format.
| Format | EU | NAC | NAW | BR | ME | ASIA | OCE |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Solo · Battle Royale | 3,550 | 1,945 | 888 | 988 | 986 | 818 | 775 |
| Duo · Battle Royale | 1,726 | 1,446 | 782 | 890 | 774 | 882 | 704 |
| Trio · Battle Royale | 382 | 410 | 313 | 363 | 315 | 463 | 276 |
| Solo · Zero Build | 9,950+ | 9,950+ | 6,950 | 9,950+ | 9,450 | 5,630 | 4,950 |
| Duo · Reload | 2,828 | 1,250 | 500 | 630 | 533 | 477 | 413 |
Median number of teams on the final leaderboard, over the cups of each format. A "+" marks the leaderboard ceiling of the public API, which stops at about 9,950 teams: the real field is at least that. NA-East is NAC, NA-West NAW, ME the Middle East, OCE Oceania.
The same cup, the same rank
To compare what a rank costs, the fairest test is the same cup, in the same season, at the same rank, in two regions. The chart puts each region against Europe at rank 100: the threshold there, as a share of the European one.
At the very top, every region is close to Europe – the best teams everywhere score similarly under the same table. The gap opens with depth, because rank 1,000 is much deeper into a field of 800 teams than into one of 3,000:
| Region | Rank 20 | Rank 100 | Rank 1,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| NA-East | 98% | 97% | 94% |
| NA-West | 94% | 90% | 78% |
| Brazil | 94% | 91% | 78% |
| Middle East | 95% | 91% | 71% |
| Asia | 90% | 85% | 63% |
| Oceania | 91% | 85% | 55% |
Median ratio to Europe over the cups of season 42 played in both regions at that rank. A dash: too few cups reach that rank in the region to say.
What this means when you play
- Do not borrow another region's cutoff. A European cutoff read into Oceania or Asia overstates the threshold, modestly at rank 100 and a lot at rank 1,000. The forecast always reads the cup's own region first.
- NA-East plays like Europe. Its fields are the next largest, and its thresholds at the same rank are within a few per cent of Europe's down to the deep ranks.
- A qualifying cut set as a share of the field travels better. "Top 25%" is a deeper rank in a big region and a shallower one in a small region, so the points it takes should vary less between regions than a fixed rank's.
- The other regions' results are evidence, not the answer. When a cup is new in your region but has already run elsewhere this week, the forecast uses the other regions' editions of the same cup, adjusted for the field, together with recent boards of your own region replayed under the cup's table – never the other region's number as is.
Where the numbers come from
Every cup's final leaderboard is read from Osirion's public Fortnite API, and the model keeps the thresholds at a set of ranks and nothing about the players. The ratios above compare, for each cup that ran in both regions in season 42, the reading the model starts from – the recent editions played the same way, the latest counting most. The method page says more.
